Sacrilege

I just saw a Gatorade commercial. The background music was the anthem of America's Pastime, "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." So imagine my surprise when I looked up and saw not my beloved White Sox, not the despicable Yankees, not even the irrelevant Toronto Blue Jays. No, it was soccer players. Soccer, an hour and a half of sissy boys running around and *maybe* scoring twice. Soccer, the reason half the baseball fields in public parks across the country disappeared in the nineties. Soccer, the most boring game ever played. It was almost enough to make me switch to Powerade. Almost.

  • Men's volleyball! Why isn't there more excitement about that?? A more interesting sport than most, and what normal person doesn't love seeing ripped shirtless men? Mmmmmm.

  • Pro soccer players could totally kick those overstuffed steroid-abusing ball-missing wussies that play mlb's ass any day. The work up so much more of a sweat than men who stand around waiting for the ball to come to them, its a much better sport for a sports drink add than baseball. Maybe not as good as basketball or football, but way better than baseball.

  • I'm not saying soccer isn't a good sport for advertising a sports drink. I'm saying they shouldn't use that song with footage of soccer players. Do they sell CrackerJacks at soccer games (or matches, whatever)? How does "one, two, three strikes you're out" apply to soccer?

As for steroids, baseball is experiencing a renaissance. The homer heavy version of the game from the late-nineties and early 2000s has passed. The White Socks aren't the only ones playing small-ball, or smart-ball as Ozzie prefers to call it. There is much more strategy and finesse to the game than casual observers appreciate. And it's a lot more exciting that way.
